Post READ ME BEFORE POSTING - Welcome and Forum Rules
Welcome! So glad you decided to click on the Competitive Balance and e-Sports discussion forum. As you may be aware, we at Hi-Rez are actively pursuing getting Tribes: Ascend to a point that it is consumed both as a fun-to-play, free-to-play game but also as a legitimate e-Sport with competitive play.

First, let me clarify competitive play. The ultimate goal of this forum and discussion is to come up with a set of server flags that the community identifies as the “Tournament Ruleset”. These rules should look to encourage strategy that guides tactics that are dependent on player execution as well as smoothing out caveats that are in the “pub game” for new players.

I’ve been a big consumer of competitive e-Sports for many years now through Tribes I & II, MLG/Gamebattles and DoTA/HoN. I’m personally excited to work with you guys to make the Tribes: Ascend competitive experience have the thrills, freedom and absurdly high skill ceiling befitting of the Starsiege: Tribes IP.

We’ve been fully aware (sometimes painfully so) of the feedback from the community
that some current gamerules are unfit for competitive play. The development team
(that sits about 20 feet from me) completely understands the needs for something different in a
competitive universe and has been working on a toolset that will allow us as a community to develop a fitting ruleset.

Now, looking at the list of currently (cannot stress that enough) planned server flags I can honestly say that there is a lot of things WE as a community can do to greatly impact a lot of the “non-competitive” issues that exist in the wide-release “pub game”. Of course, there are some core elements that are non-compromise-able the primary one being (don’t flame me bro) Loadouts and the two-weapon system.

Let’s get right into the flags, they are divided into two main buckets, “General Match Settings” and “Gameplay Settings”.

General Match Settings
++ Match Duration
++ Number of Players
++Game Mode (Rabbit/CTF)
++Score Limit (Caps/Rabbit Timer)
++Map Rotation
++Message of the Day
++Admin list (Who can do what)
++Auto-Balance On/Off
++Auto-Balance on Join On/Off
+Friendly Fire On/Off
+Set Respawn Time
++Set Overtime Time
++Friends/Invite Only or Open
++Password Restriction
++Admins Can:
----Change map
----Kick Players
----Alert all players (Raid Warning Style Text)

Gameplay Settings
++Vehicles
----Set Vehicle Limits (How many of each in a match at any time)
----Set Vehicle Price in Credits (0 is free)
++Upgrades
----Allow Base Upgrades
----Allow Base Turret/Base Sensor as Deployables & set Price
----Set Upgrades Price (as a multiplier)
++Call-Ins
----Call-Ins Active On/Off
----Call-In price multiplier
++Classes Allowed
----Disable any class(es)
++Generator Auto Regen On/Off
++Spawn Naked as Solider
++ Speed Cap Multiplier
----Increase speed cap 2x, 3x, etc where 10x is effectively Off
++Player deployables powered by Generator On/Off

So there you have it.

Here’s what I want this forum to be, you guys can take it down the toilet or make it a legitimate source of competitive balancing discussion, ultimately what comes from this forum is what will be the official tournament ruleset and if it sucks, you have only yourselves to blame because you were too busy making sweet memes and flaming each other to have reasonable and gentlemanly discourse.

Please note, while in this forum, I am your God. Being generally ornery is one thing, but being rude to other players and being non-constructive will result in a permanent ban from my realm. I’m still working out the whole “method” through which we should discuss server settings for tourney play and I would like to get you guys involved even at that level. Here’s what I’m initially proposing:

I will update a locked thread that has the current “consensus rules” server flags for tournament/competitive play. Players will be allowed to create three kinds of threads: Ruleset Paradigms, Server Flag Suggestions and Strategy/Tactical Impact of Change threads.

Ruleset Paradigms: Player’s own rule-suggestion threads with the format of: bulleted list of EXISTING CONFIRMED server flags, proposed values, and description of merits, which as a community we will critique and homogenize and playtest until it feels the way we want it to.

Server Flag Suggestions: Server flags that could potentially be added. If they are absurd or have been confirmed as “no” then the thread will be deleted. If a server flag is approved by the community after discussion and theory crafting I will send it up the line.

Strategy/Tactical Impact of Change: Discuss the most current “Consensus Rules” this is the closest to general discussion you should get in the Competitive Forum.

Cheers!
